Hello! Welcome to my blog. My name is Jason and I am from St. Paul, Minnesota, USA. I started backpacking when I was 14 years old, now I am in my forties. Backpacking has taken me from southern California and up through Canada and Alaska and many points in between.
Backpacking for me is such an amazing experience. It is challenging, rewarding, often fun, sometimes painful and on rare occasion even a little scary (primarily due to weather and some interesting animal encounters). I feel in my element living in wilderness and depending on myself, my skills and what is in my pack.
I am setting off in early March 2018 to complete a Thru-Hike of the Appalachian Trail. I will be starting at Amicalola Falls State Park in Georgia and finishing atop Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park in Maine. This blog will describe my adventure and provide a means to communicate and share with others while I am out on the trail.
While backpacking is far from new to me, what is new is the magnitude of this trip. The gear is also new. The gear I used on my past trips was very durable, dependable, bombproof gear. For this trip I am utilizing quality ultralight gear to cut weight and make it “easier” on my body, so we will be finding out how this type of gear and I get along.
