Day 169

I hiked 21.5 miles into Baxter State Park. I set up camp at The Birches. The Birches is a small camp site just for Nobo thru hikers. I went to the Ranger Station and registered with them. I am a go to summit Mount Kathadin tomorrow morning.

This morning, I was not sure of what I was going to do. Maybe spend a night by Abol Bridge or take a rest day. I got to the general store by Abol Bridge and did not like it. It was loud, dusty. I just decided to push on with no plan and no idea of what is going to happen, other than what is meant to be, shall be. The trail will provide.

I made it to the register for The Birches, which is about 9 miles south of the camp and there was plenty of space left (holds 12, 3 had signed up) and the weather forecast looks good. So I made up my mind. Tomorrow is Summit Day!!!!! My date with destiny! The mountain has been pulling me pretty strongly the last few days for sure. I am meant to be here and see it through. It so does not feel real to be at the base of it and looking up one mile into the air, to its summit. On the hike today, I would get a few clear looks at the big mountain and it just filled me with awe and joy to such an extent I can’t describe it. It is no ordinary mountain and this has not been an ordinary adventure. For me, finishing here is the only way for it to be.

I will go to bed early and hope I can sleep. Will get an early start tomorrow morning.

  4. Congratulations Jason! I am so inspired and excited for you. I understand the trepidation over returning to urban life. However, you can take Jason out of the AT, but you will never take the AT out of Jason. The trail will always provide for the rest of your life. You are blessed for sure!!!!

  7. I guess my comment got lost in space… I was saying that I was excited for you and not having read the last day yet, could just feel the anticipation of what you had ahead. I know the feeling of not wanting something to end, but also that you worked so hard and long that you want to get to the ultimate reward!!! Can’t wait to toast your success when you return!
