Day 81

Today was a zero in Harpers Ferry, WV. I think I am going back to the trail tomorrow. I was going to do two zeros here, but decided not to.

I explored the area and have done what I can.

Harpers Ferry was picked by George Washington to be the nation’s second armory. They stored and made guns here. John Brown tried to end slavery here by taking over an armory and to start a slave rebellion, but things did not go as planned. The North and South fought over this town in the Civil War and it went back and forth a few times. Storer College was also founded here as was the Niagra Movement. Lots of history here.

Town view.

John Browns Fort as its known…the old firehouse the Marines stormed during John Browns Raid and where local militia showed up too.

Appalachian Trail Conservancy photo.

An old armory building.

Part of old Storer College. The college has a great story.

Nice post, J. Hope the weather is good as you follow the rails out of town!

When is a human truly free? Free to drink from a pure stream, to breath fresh and clean air, awakening to a bird song, feasting upon a forager’s harvest from nature’s garden… Freedom? Freed from domestication? Reverence?
