Day 119

Hiked from about 6:30 a.m. to 7:15 p.m. It was a little longer day than normal, but not much. I think stopping around 4 p.m. would have been better. I hiked about 21 miles today. Had a couple of decent climbs today. But a lot of rock and tree roots today. It was pretty warm and humid too. Mainly focused on moving at a pace I could handle in the heat all day and keeping hydrated.

Just after lunch time and halfway up a big climb, there was Trail Magic. A guy named Commander left a cooler of cold Gatoraide and a metal can full of bags of potatoe chips and other snacks for the thru hikers. Way Cool!

Chatted with other hikers on and off today as I met them. It is rare the topic ever comes up, but people today were laughing about all the various hurting body parts and wondering if they will ever be normal again. That topic must have been in the air.

It was a pretty quiet day on the trail today. Near the trail magic and about 100 yards behind me, a large tree snapped in half and the top fell down. There was no wind, so that made it seem weird to me. It happens a lot and I see it a lot.

I made camp in the woods near a beaver pond. Not my favorite water choice, but sometimes ya take what the trail provides. Soaked my feet and ran water over myself to try to cool down before bed.

(PaceCar (PC), please be aware of and excuse the questionable PC language)

“At press time, reports indicated every single person in the country had gritted their teeth and forced their mouth into a resigned smile before moving on with their day.”

… Except for those re-wilding, understanding and experiencing the significance of hearing the sounds of a tree naturally falling in the woods.

Many lessons, you will have. Share them with all your toes, beaver’s like them, don’t you know

    Finish strong PC
    Embrace these moments

  2. I was hiking along the Superior Hiking Trail with a friend about 5-6 yrs. ago when a large limb fell out of a tree and stuck right in the ground -it was about 5″ in diameter and about 6′ of it stood up right out of the ground. Scared the hell out of us. I was about 5′ away from it, but my friend maybe 2′ away max. You know the old saying…shit happens! My friend talked about it for a long time!
You had a long day on the trail today… hope you’re sleeping well right now!

    1. Ha..those close calls leave us with good stories and memories, which is fun. Any injuries are usually not as fun. Have a great week.
